TVByNumbers: Medium's Ratings currently no better Than 'The Ex-List' so far

Amid the sloppy kisses being given by the media to CBS for saving Medium from cancellation at the hands of NBC I noticed (in the process of working on another post), that Medium’s 2.0 adults 18-49 ratings average after 4 episodes this season, is the same as The Ex-List’s was last season after 3 episodes (but through the comparable week of the season).

While the fact that CBS produces Medium (vs. Fox for The Ex-List) means it financially benefits from more than just the advertising revenue for the show’s continuation, let’s dismiss the idea that picking up Medium has been some sort of ratings coup for CBS.

Edit/Update: While it is 100% true that Medium has done no better than The Ex-List up to this point last season, the fact that Ghost Whisperer is down 19% vs. last season puts this in a very different light.

Arquette cherishes normal, paranormal

After 100 episodes playing psychic/mother/wife/paralegal Allison Dubois on the drama "Medium," Patricia Arquette admits certain things are easy to foretell about the show. "She's always going to have a bad dream," jokes Arquette, referring to the spooky visions that usually kick off each episode. "Human beings will do horrible things to each other. And the kids will keep growing. Those things hold true."

However, what the Emmy-winning actress is modestly omitting in laying out the hallmarks of this one-hour survivor of schedule changes, shortened seasons and a recent network switch (from NBC to CBS) is the series' refreshingly grounded portrayal of a middle-class household.

'Medium' digs deep into creep: Show's staff open to every smallscreen scare

"One of the great things about doing a show that's set largely in the landscape of the mind or of dreams is that it presents infinite possibilities," says "Medium" creator-showrunner Glenn Gordon Caron about his 100-episode-strong series, which has a visual aesthetic that covers the intimate messiness of domestic drama, the suspenseful creep of a crime thriller and the anything-goes realm of heroine Allison Dubois's nightly visions. When he pitched the show to NBC, Caron likened the style he wanted to the tonal mix of early Jonathan Demme movies like "Something Wild."

Medium continues to celebrate its 100th episode

Medium had an official 100th episode party back in August, but it looks as though the party was still going strong on Sunday night. CBS has released a few photos of Medium’s producers and a few members of the cast celebrating the big 1-0-0 at L.A. eatery STK. Executive Producer Glenn Gordon Caron was in attendance along with his wife Tina DiJoseph, who plays Lynn DiNovi on the show. Also on hand was executive producer Kelsey Grammar and his wife, Camille, along with David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios.

TV Ratings: Spirits are with CBS Fridays

Fast National ratings for Friday, Oct. 23, 2009. CBS kept hold of its usual spot in the ratings lead on Friday, while "Dateline" put up decent numbers for NBC.

The Eye's drama lineup averaged 8.3 million viewers and a 5.2 rating/9 share in households in primetime. NBC (7.1 million, 4.7/8) took second. There was a pretty big drop from there to third-place ABC (4.9 million, 3.4/6). FOX (2.2 million, 1.3/2) edged The CW (1.8 million, 1.2/2) for fourth. CBS also led the adults 18-49 demographic with a 2.0 rating. NBC's 1.6 was good enough for second, followed by ABC at 1.3. FOX and The CW tied for fourth at 0.8.
