TV Ratings: Canceled 'Medium' helps CBS to another Friday Win

Fast National ratings for Friday, Nov. 19, 2010: CBS continues its successful Friday streak -- led by the just canceled "Medium," which experienced a slight raise in the ratings this week. Also notable was NBC's TV Movie "Harmony: A Film Inspired by the Prince of Wales," which debuted to mediocre ratings despite the current renewed interest in the Royals' personal lives.

CBS averaged 9.6 million viewers and took a 6.1 rating/11 share of households for the night. ABC was second with 5.3 million and a 3.5/6. NBC came in third (4.0 million, 2.7/5). FOX was in fourth (3.0 million, 1.8/3) and the CW came in fifth (2.3 million, 1.4/3).  ABC bested CBS with a 1.6 in the key demo. CBS (1.5), The CW (1.0), NBC (0.9) and FOX (0.9) followed.

'Medium' officially cancelled, will air finale in January

After two networks and more than 125 episodes, "Medium" will come to an end this January. CBS confirmed the foregone conclusion of the "Medium" cancellation on Thursday (Nov. 18) morning, revealing that the show's last episode will air on January 21.

Nobody was particularly surprised by the news, since Star Patricia Arquette said as much earlier in the week, just days after reports broke that CBS wouldn't be picking up a back-nine for the supernatural drama. In a message to fans, series creator Glenn Gordon Caron wrote, "It's true. Allison Dubois will dream her last dream on 'Medium,' Friday, January 21st. In what we believe will be a series defining episode, Allison and her family will stare destiny in the eye. And destiny will not blink."

"Medium" premiered on NBC in January of 2005. Not only was the show a popular success, but it earned Arquette an Emmy that same year. Arquette would go on to earn three Golden Globe nominations and a second Emmy nod for the series.

EW's 'Medium' scoop: 'We got canceled,' says star

Though CBS cut the episodic order on Medium from 22 to 13 last month, the network has not said whether the drama has officially been canned. But star Patricia Arquette is saying as much: The actress told EW that “we got canceled” and the show only has two more episodes to shoot.

“I was trying to get information from the writers about the last episode,” Arquette told EW this weekend while attending a gala at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. “I don’t know what it’s going to be, but they’re really excited about it. They’re like, `we’re just going to burn the whole thing down!’ I’m really excited.” She’s not looking forward to saying goodbye, however. “It’s been a great time. I love that time in my life.”

The Morning Fix: Disney takes hit on 'Medium' reruns.

Didn't see this coming. Walt Disney Co. released its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings Thursday and said profits fell 7% to $835 million. One of the causes was a $58-million write-down the company had to take on reruns of "Medium," a drama about a woman who solves crimes by talking to spirits, that has not delivered for Lifetime, the cable network that Disney co-owns. Otherwise, it was not a bad quarter as Disney reported advertising gains for its broadcast and cable channels as well as improvements of its theme parks and film studio. Coverage of the results from the Los Angeles Times, Bloomberg and the New York Times. Disney is also investigating who leaked some of their results before it could. [SOURCE]
